| biosphere | all portions of the planet where life exists, including land, water, and air. |
| species | a group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce offspring. |
| populations | groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area. |
| communities | assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area |
| ecosystem | a collection of all organisms that live in a particular place together with their non-living or physical, environment |
| biome | a group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities |
| autotrophs | use energy from their environment to fuel themselves |
| producers | organisms that make their own food and produce tissue |
| food web | links all of the food chains in an ecosystem together |
| trohpic level | each step in a food chain or web |
| biomass | the total amount of living tissue within an given trophic level |
| biogeochemical cycle | connects biological, geological, and chemical aspects throughout a biosphere |
| limiting nutrient | when an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient that is scarce or cycles slowly. |
| weather | the day to day condition of Earth's atmosphereat a particular time and place |
| climate | the average year after year conditions of temperature and precipitation |
| greenhouse effect | the natural situation in which heat is retained in the atmosphere |
| biotic factor | the biological influences on organisms within an ecosystem |
| abiotic factor | non-living factors like temperature and wind that shape ecosystems |
| niche | the full range of physical and biological conditions in which an organism lives and the way in which the organism uses these conditions |
| logistic growth | when the growth of a population stops or slows following a period of exponential growth |
| carrying capacity | the maximum number of species that can live |
