Enzyme Basics AP Bio

Campbell 8th Edition Chapter 8

QuestionAnswer
activation energy The amount of eneergy that reactants must absorb before a chemical reaction will start; also called free energy of activation.
active site The specific portion of an enzyme that attaches to the substrate by means of weak chemical bonds.
allosteric regulation The binding of a molecule to a protein that affects the function of a protein at a different site.
anabolic pathway A metabolic pathway that synthesizes a complex molecule from simpler compounds. Synthesis reaction- endothermic.
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) An adenine containing nucleoside triphosphate that releases free energy when its phosphate bonds are hydrolyzed. This energy is used to drive endergonic reactions in cells.
bioenergetics The flow of energy through an animal, taking into account the energy used for basic function, activity, growth, reproduction, and regulation, and the energy lost to the environment as heat or waste.
catabolic pathway A metabolic pathway that releases energy by breaking down complex molecules to simpler compounds.
catalyst A chemical agent that changes the rate of a reaction without being consumed by the reaction.
chemical energy Energy stored in the bonds of molecules; a form of potential energy.
coenzyme An organic molecule serving as a cofactor. Most vitamins function as coenzymes in important metabolic reactions.
cofactor Any NONPROTEIN MOLECULE or ION that is required for the porper functioning of an enzyme. Cofactors can be permanently nound to the active site or may bind loosely with the substrate during catalysis.
competitive inhibitor A substance that

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
