Ecology flashcards

QuestionAnswer
Ecology the scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their enviroment, or surroundings
Biosphere the combined portions of the planet in which all life exists, including, land, water, and air, or atmosphere
Species a group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring
Populations groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area
Communities assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area
Ecosystem a collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with thier nonliving, or physical, enviroment
Biome a group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominate communities
Autotrophs organisms that use sunlight or chemicals to produce food
Producers thigs that make their own food
Photosynthesis the process of converting sunlight into food and energy
Chemosynthesis the process of organisms using chemical energy to produce carbohydrates
Heterotrophs organisms that rely on other organisms for thier food and energy supply
Consumers another name for heterotrophs
Herbivores organisms that obtain energy from eating plants
Carnivores organisms that eat animals for energy
Omnivores organisms that eat both plants and animals
Detritivores organisms that feed off of plant and animal remains
Decomposers organisms that break down organic matter
Food Chain the chain through an ecosystem in which energy passes
Food Web the network of feeding relationships in an ecosystem
Trophic Level each step in a food chain
Ecological Pyramid a diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a food chain or food web
Biomass the total amount of living tissue in a given trophic level
Biogeochemical Cycles the process of elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter passing from one organism to another
Evaporation the process by which water changes from liquid form to an atmospheric gas
Transpiration the process of water entering the atmoshpere by evaporationg from the leaves of plants
Nutrients all the chemical substances that an organism needs to sustain life
Nitrogen Fixation the process of bacteria coverting nitrogen gas to ammonia
Denitrification the process of bacteria converting nitrates into nitrogen gas
Primary Productivity the rate at which organic matter is created by producers in an ecosystem
Limiting Nutrient when an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient
Algal Bloom the result of a large input of limiting nutrient
Weather the day to day condition of earths atmosphere at a particular time and place
Climate the average year after year condition of temperature and precipitation in a particular region
Greenhouse Effect the natural situationin which heat is retained by this layer of greenhouse gases
Biotic Factor biological influences on organisms within an ecosystem
Abiotic Factor physical, or nonliving, factors that affect an ecosystem
Habitat the area where an organism lives
Niche a full range of physical and biological conditions in which an organism lives and the way the organism uses those conditions, it is its occupation
Logistic Growth when a populations growth slows or stops following a period of exponential growth
Carrying Capacity the number of the largest number of individuals an ecosystem can support
Demography the scientific study of human populations
Demographic Transition a dramatic change in birth and death rates
Green Revolution modern agricultural techniques, such as chemical fertilizers and monoculture
Renewable Resource a recource that can regenerate if it is alive or can be replenished by biochemical cycles if they are nonliving
Pollutant a harmful material that can enter the biosphere through the land, air, or water
Biodiversity the sum of the total of the genetically based variety of all organisms in the biosphere
Biological Magnification concentrations of harmful substances increas ein organisms at higher trophic levels in a food chain or food web

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
