| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Ecology | ecology- scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their enviroment. |
| Biosphere | biosphere- part of Earth in which life exists including land, water, and air or atmosphere. |
| Species | species- group of similar organisms that can be breed and produce fertile offsprings. |
| Population | population- group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area |
| Community | community- assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area. |
| Ecosystem | ecosystem- collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with their nonliving enviroment. |
| Autotroph | autotroph- organism that can capture energy from sunlight pr chemicals and use it to produce its own food from inorganic compound; also called a producer. |
| Heterotroph | heterotrpoh- organism that obtains energy from the food it consumes; also called a consumer. |
| Food Web | food web- network of complex interactions formed by the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem. |
| Trophic Level | trophic level- step in food chain or food web. |
| Biomass | biomass- total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level. |
| Biogeochemical Cycle | biogeochemical cycle- process in which elements, chemical compunds, and other forms of matter are passed form one organism to another and from one part of the biosphere to another. |
| Limiting Nutrient | limiting nutrient- single nutrient that either is scarce or cycles very slowly, limiting the growth of organisms in an ecosystem. |
| Weather | Weather- the condition of Earth's atmoshphere at a particular time and place. |
| Climate | climate- the average yearly condition of temperature and precipitation in a region. |
| Green House Effect | green house effect- the trapping of heat by gases in the atmosphere. |
| Biotic Factor | biotic factor- include all the living things with which organisms interact. |
| Abiotic Factor | abiotic factor- include temperature, soil type, and other nonliving factors. |
| Niche | niche-consists of all the physical and biological conditions on which an organism lives and the way in which the organism uses those conditions. |
| Logistic Growth | logistic growth- change in a population high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates |
| Carrying Capacity | carrying capacity- the number of individuals of a particular species that a given enviroment can support. |
| Demography | demography- the study of the characteristics of human populations, such as size, growth, density, distribution, and vital statistics. |
| Demographic Transition | demographic transition- change in a population high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates |
| Renweable Resource | renewable resource- can regrow if they are alive or be replaced by biochemical cycles if they are nonliving. |
| Pollutant | pollutant- harmful material that can enter the biosphere through land, air, or water. |
| Biodiversity | biodiversity- the sum of the genetically based variety of all organisms in the biosphere. |
| Biological Magnification | biological magnification- concentration of toxins increase in organisms at higher trophic levels in a food chain or food web |
| Green Revolution | green revolution- dramtically increased the worlds food supply |
