| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| what is ecology? | the scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and thier enviromnents, or surroundings. |
| what is a biosphere? | a part of earth in which life exists including land, water, air, and atmosphere.(extends 8 kilometers above earths surface and as far as 11 kilometers below the surface of the ocean.) |
| what is a species? | it is a groupp of similar organisma that can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| what is a population? | it is a group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area. |
| what is a community? | assemblages of different populations that live together the in a defined area. |
| what is an ecosystem? | it is a collection of all the organisms that live in a perticuler place, together with thier nonliving, or physical environment. |
| what is an autotroph? | organisms that caputre energy from sunlight or chemicals and use that energy to produce thier own food.( use energy from the environment to fuel the assembly of simple inorganic compounds into complex organic molecules.) |
| what is a heterotroph? | it is an organism that relays on other organisms for their energy and food supply.(consumers) |
| what is a food web? | is a feeding relationship among the various organisms in an ecosystem form a network of complex interactions.(link all food chains together) |
| that is a trophic level? | each step in a food chain or food web. (producers= first, consumers= second, third and fourth) |
| what is a biomass? | the total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level. |
| what is biogeochemical cycle? | elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed for one organism to another and from one part of the biosphere to another.( matter is recycled within and between ecosystems) |
| what is limiting nutrient? | when an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient that is scarce or cycles very slowly |
| what is weather? | it is the day-to-day condition of the earths atmosphere at a particular time and place. |
| what is climate? | refers to the year-after-year conditions of temperature and precipitation in a particular region. |
| ?what is the green house effect? | the natural situation in which heat is retained by this layer of greenhouse gases. |
| what is a biotic factor? | a biological influence on organisms within an ecosystem. |
| what is an abiotic factor? | physical or nonliving factors that shape ecosystems. |
| what is a niche? | is a full range of physical and biological conditions in which an organism lives and the way in which the organism uses those conditions. |
| what is logistic growth? | occurs when a populations growth slows or stops following a period of exponential growth. |
| what is carrying capacity? | largest number of individuals of a population that a given environment can support. |
| what is demography? | it is the scientific study of human populations. |
| what is demographic transition? | it is a change in population from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. |
| what is green revolution? | the development of highly productive crop strains and the use of modern agricultural techniques to increase yields of food crops. |
| what i a renewable resource? | it is a resource that can regenerate quickly and is replaceable. |
| what is a pollutant? | it is a harmful material that can enter the biosphere through land, air or water. |
| what is biodiversity? | it is biological diversity; that sum total of the variety of organisms in th ebiosphere. |
| what is biological magnification? | increasing concentration of a harmful substance in organisms at higher trophic levels in a food chain or food web. |
