Chapter 5

Bold Words

QuestionAnswer
What is a cell? The basic units of structure and function in living things
What is the Cell Theory? It is the basic framework in which biologists have tried to understand living things ever since.
What does the Cell Theory State? 1. All living things are composed of cells 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things 3. All cells come from preexisting cells.
What do cells of animals and cells of plants have in common? 1. Cell Membrane (outer boundary of the cell) 2. Nucleus (Control Center) 3. Cytoplasm (material between the cell membrane and the nucleus)
What is the cell membrane? The cell structure that regulates the passage of materials between the cell and its environment; aids in the protection and support of the cell.
What is the Cell wall? The cell structure that surrounds the cell membrane for protection and support in plants, algae and some bacteria.
What is the Nucleus? Is the organelle that controls the cell's activities and contains DNA
What is the Prokaryotes? Is a single-celled organism whose cells do not have a nucleus.
What is the Eukaryotes? Organism made up of cells that have a nucleus.
What is the Nuclear envelope? Is a membrane that surrounds the nucleus of a cell.
What is the Nucleolus? Is the cell structure that contains RNA and proteins.
What is a Chromosome? Is a threadlike structure in a cell that contains the genetic information that is passed on from one generation of cells to the next.
What is a Cytoplasm? Is an area between the nucleus and cll membrane of a cell.
What is the Mitochondrion? Is the organelle that changes chemical energy stored in food into compounds that can be used by the cell
What is the Chloroplast? Is the an organelle that converts sunlight into chemical energy in plants.
What is the Ribosomes? Is an organelle in which proteins are made.
What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum? Is a complex network that transports materials though out the inside of a cell
What is the Golgi Apparatus? Is the organelle that modifies collects packages and distributes molecules made at one location of the cell and used at another.
What is a lysosome? Is an organelle that contains chemical and enzymes necessary for digesting certain materials in the cell.
What is a Plastid? Is a plant cell organelle involved in the storage of food and pigments
What is a Cytoskeleton? Is the framework of the cell composed of a variety of filaments and fibers that support cell structure and drive cell movement
What is an organelle? Is a cell structure that performs a specialized function within the cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
