Action inhibits metabolism of folic acid in bacteria at two different points
contraindications/ precautions megaloblastic anemia secondary to folic deficiency, severe renal impairment; use caution in hepatic or renal deficient or HIV patients
Dosages: Adults, bacterial infections mild: 6-12 mg TMP/kg./day divided q 12 hours serious: 15-20 mg TMP/kg/day divided q 6-8 hr
Dosages: adult, Urinary tract infections 160 mg TMP/800 mg SMX q 12 hr for 10-14 days
