A vent or fissure in the Earth's surface though which magma and gases are expelled. Volcano
Molten Rock Magma
These eruptions produce relatively calm flows of lava. Nonexplosive Eruptions
When clouds of hot debris, ash, and gas rapidly shoot out from a volcano. Explosive Eruption
A body of molten rock deep underground that feeds a volcano. Magma Chamber
An opening at the surface of the Earth through which volcanic materials passes. Vent
A type of lava rock that was once frothy with gas and it floats. pumice
Magma with a stiff consistancy, plugs vents, traps gases, and is very explosive. Silica-Rich Magma
This combination causes gas build-up which can be very explosive. Water and Magma
Liquid magma that flows from a volcano. Lava
This material forms when magma is blasted into the air and hardens. Pyroclastic Material
A lava with low vicosity that pours out quickly and forms into small jagged pieces. Aa
A high vicosity lava that flows slowly and forms glassy surfaces with rounded wrinkles. Pahoehoe
A lower vicosity lava that forms rounded lumps underwater. Pillow Lava
A higher vicosity lava that oozes from a volcano and forms jumbled heaps of sharp-edged chunks. Blocky Lava
Large blobs of magma that harden in the air. Volcanic Bombs
Pebble-like bits of magma that harden before they hit the ground. Lapilli
Gas bubbles that explode into tiny, glass-like slivers. Volcanic Ash
