Taxonomy Vocab

TermDefinition
Prokaryote Organism that does not have a nucleus.
Eukaryote Organism whose cells do contain a nucleus.
Asexual Reproduction Reproduces by dividing in half. Only requires one parent. Offspring have identical DNA.
Sexual Reproduction New offspring are created from two parents. The combination of DNA from both parents results in offspring with their own unique DNA.
Multicellular Organism composed of many cells
Unicellular Organism composed of only one cell
Heterotroph Organism which gets its energy from other organisms (Eats or digests)
Autotroph Organism that makes its own food using other energy sources, such as sunlight or chemicals.
Phototroph Organism that transforms energy from the sun into glucose through photosynthesis
Chemotroph A type of autotroph. An organism that makes its own food by breaking down chemical compounds into nutrients
Cell The smallest unit of life. The building blocks for all living organisms.
Nucleus The control center of the cell. DNA is stored here.
Chloroplast Organelle inside a plant cell that contains chlorophyll. Photosynthesis occurs here.
Cell wall A rigid layer surrounding a cell that provides structure and support. It is not found in animal cells
DNA The genetic “code” for all living things. In eukaryotes, it is found inside the nucleus of the cell.
