The Formation, Mining, and Use of Minerals

Metamorphism occurs when changes in pressure, temperature, or chemical make-up alter a rock
Pegmatites teardrop-shaped bodies of magma under the earth's surface
Pluton what you get when slowly-cooling magma solidifies
Ore a mineral deposit large and pure enough to be mined for profit
Reclamation the process of returning land to its original state after being mined
Open pits and quarries surface mines
Metallic Minerals good conductors of heat and electricity
Evaporating Salt Water when a body of salt water dries up, minerals are left behind
Metamorphic Rock when metamorphism takes place
Limestones Surface water and groundwater carry dissolved materials into bodies of water where they crystallize on the bottom
Hot-Water Solutions Groundwater works its way downward and is heated by magma, it then reacts with minerals to form a hot liguid solution. Minerals form out of the hot fluid.
