Mr. Biando's Lab - Changes in Climate

DefinitionTerm
A long period of climate cooling during which ice sheets cover large areas of the Earth's surface; during a glacial period. Ice Age
A period of time in which enormous sheets of ice advance (grow larger) and cover more surface area. Glacial Period
A period of time in which sheets of ice begin to melt and sea levels start to rise (increase). Interglacial Period
A scientific explaination about how ice ages are caused by a change in the of the Earth's tilt of it's axis and the shape of it's orbit around the sun. The Milankovitch Theory
One theory that proposes that an ice age happens when all the Earth's continents are positioned closer to the polar regions. Plate Tectonics
A naturally occuring geological process that sends large amounts of dust particles, ash and smoke into the atmosphere which blocks the sun's rays, which causes the Earth to cool. Volcanic Eruptions
When a large piece of rock slams into the Earth from space, it causes debris to shoot into the atmosphere which blocks the sun's rays, which causes the Earth to cool. Asteroid Impact
Every 11 years the sun changes from a solar maximum to a solar minimum which effects the warming of the winds, which in turn affects climate patterns. The Sun's Cycle
A gradual increase in the average global temperature. Global Warming
The warming of the surface and lower atmosphere of the Earth that occurs when carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other gases in the air absorb and trap thermal energy. Greenhouse Effect
