2nd Grade Clouds and Precipitation Vocabulary

cloud a mass of tiny drops of water, dust, or pieces of ice
cumulus a type of cloud that is fluffy and round on top; indicates fair weather
cirrus a type of cloud that is thin, white and wispy
stratus a type of cloud that is long, flat, gray and often makes the sky look overcast
fog a cloud that forms close to the ground
rain most common type of precipitation; forms when water droplets combine or when ice melts
snow flakes made of ice crystals that form inside clouds when it is very cold
sleet formed when rain freezes, or partially melted snowflakes refreeze
dew droplets of water that form on the ground or objects when condensation takes place
ice crystals tiny bits of frozen water
