| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Matter | anything that occupies space and has mass |
| Mass | the quantity of matter and object has |
| Element | substances that cannot be broken down chemically into simpler kinds of matter |
| Atom | the simplest particles of an element that retains all the properties of that element |
| Nucleus | central region, it makes up the bulk of the mass of an atom and consists of two kinds of subatomic particles, a proton and a nuetron |
| Proton | is positivly charged |
| Nuetron | is neutraly charged |
| Atomic Number | the number of protons in an atom |
| Mass Number | the total number of proton and nuetrons in an atom |
| Electron | the number of positivly charged protons is balanced by an equal number of small negitively charged particles |
| Orbital | a three-deimensional region around a nucleus that indicates the probable location of an electron |
| Isotope | Atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons |
| Compound | made up of atoms of two or more elements in fixed proportions |
| Chemical Bond | attractive forces that hold atoms together |
| Covalent Bond | forms when tow atoms share one or more pairs of electrons |
| Molecule | the simplest part of a substance that retains all the properties of that substance and can exist in a free state |
| Ion | An atom or molecule with and electrical charge |
| Ionic Bond | Positive and negitive electrical charges attract each other, the sodium ion and the cholride ion attract each other |
