Pests Insects which are not beneficial to mankind
Entomology The science concerned with the study of insects
Simple Eyes These kinds eyes are typically found on insects and cannot see shapes, but can tell light from dark.
Mandibles An insect's chewing mouth parts.
Thorax The insect's midsection.
Scaled This type of wings is often colorful and covered with tiny plated layers that form a fine powder when rubbed.
Cerci Small appendages at the very tip of the abdomen in many insects, which are like feelers, but often look like pincers.
Larvae Young insects,
Palps The tiny feelers an insect has near its mouth to touch and taste food.
Tarsus The scientific name for a foot.
Abdomen The end segment of an insect's body.
Clasper A device found on the end of a male insect used to hold the female during mating.
Cast The left over material from an insect's molted exoskeleton, which looks like a shell of the insect.
Antennae The feelers on an insect's head which function like its nose.
Proboscis The long tubular flexible mouth part found on butterflies and flies.
Halteres Tiny wing-like structures on a fly that are used for balance.
Spiracles Very small openings on the insect's abdomen that let air into its body.
Ovipositor A shaft on the end of the abdomen of female insects, used to lay eggs.
Compound Eyes Most insects have this kind of eyes, enabling them to see out of many different lenses, which together form one image.
Pheromones Chemical messages that insects release to communicate with other insects.
Stylets Sharp, piercing tools on the mouthpart of an insect which cut into the food source, such as a mosquito uses to penetrate flesh.
Membranous This type of wings is thin, often clear, and has veins running through it.
Entomologists Scientists who study insects.
Zoology The study of animals.
Zoologist A scientist who specializes in the study of animals.
Taxonomy The science dealing with describing, identifying, naming, grouping, and classifying living things.
Setae A stiff hair, bristle, or bristlelike process or part on an organism.
Passive Breathing The process by which insects draw in oxygen through small pores called spiracles.
