What is homeostasis? maintaining a stable internal environment
What are the characteristics of life? organism is made of cells, responds to stimuli, maintains homeostasis, uses energy, grows and develops, reproduces
What two things happen when an organism grows and develops? The cells increase in number and change.
Sexual reproduction involves how many parents? Two
What is sexual reproduction? Offspring has DNA from both parents and is different from them
What is asexual reproduction? Involves one parent
What is asexual reproduction? offspring is identical to parent
What are the necessities of life? food, water, oxygen, and a space to live
What is a producer? Uses sun's energy to make own food
What is a consumer? eat producers or other consumers for energy
What is a decomposer? Get energy from breaking down nutrients in dead organisms or animal waste
What is water necessary for? reactions in cells
What is oxygen needed for? reactions in cells
What did Linnaeus develop? A classification system which grouped organisms based on similar structures
The modern classification groups organisms based on what? similar internal and external features
The order of Linnaeus' classification system is? kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
What is a kingdom? largest group in system
What is a kingdom? The groups are the least specific and organisms have the least in commom; cannot reproduce together

What defines organisms in a species? the groupings are most specific, the organisms have most in common and can reproduce together
