Wallace 7th Grade Scientific Inquiry

QuestionAnswer
observing using your senses to gather information
inferring explaining or interpreting what you observe
hypothesis possible answer to a scientific question
variables factors or “things” that can change in an experiment
controlled experiment experiment in which only one variable is changed—everything else is kept the same
manipulated variable the one variable that is purposely changed to test the hypothesis
responding variable the variable that is expected to change in response to what you’re testing (what you’re measuring)
experimental group the group that gets the “thing” you’re testing
control group the group that does NOT get the “thing” you’re testing so you have something to compare to
quantitative observation an observation that has a number (8 legs, 2.3 cm, etc.)
qualitative observation an observation using your 5 senses that does not have a number (red, fuzzy, smooth, etc.)
