1.3 Blood

Topic 1.3 Blood (Science 30)

QuestionAnswer
Plasma conssits of water, dissolved gases, proteins, sugars, vitamins, minerals, hormons and waste products.
Function of Blood -Preserve slight alkalinity (basic pH) of our body tissues. -Equalize the body temp -Transport hormones -Transport antibodies and specialized cells to fight infection -Allow clotting to reduce blood loss -Remiove CO2,NH3, & waste products.
Blood Components 1.Plasma 2.White blood cells 3.Platelets 4.Red Blood Cells
Plasma Proteins Albumin, Globuins,Fibtinogen
Albumin maintains osmotic pressure, which affect blood volume
Globiluns act as antibodies and fight disease
Fibrinogen acts as a clotting agent
White Blood Cells (WBC) -called leukocytes -5 types -protect body from "infection & invaders" -granular wbc= produced in bone marrow -Non-granular wbc= produced in tonsils, lymph nodes, spleen= referred to as "lymphocytes"
What is larger, a white blood cell or a red blood cell WBC!
Function of WBC fights desiese and foreign invaders
where are wbc made! BONE MARROW!
Platelets fragment of cells, play a key role in clotting of blood.
Platelets(a few facts) -Surrounded by membranes -contain thermoplastin -When in contact with Ca2+ ions they will cause clotting
Clotting Process 1. skin is cut--> blood leaks out. 2. platelts come into contact with rough surface of the cut and rupture to release chemicals that convert protein fibrinogen into fibrin. 3. RBC get caught in the fibrin net to form a blood clot 4.clot hardens to scab
red blood cells(some facts) -called erythrocytes -specialized for oxygen transportation -hemoglobin allows for large quantities of oxygen to be transported
Where are rbc's produced? Bone marrow!
OLD RBC'S: -recycled in the liver & excrected in feces -used to make bile in the gall blader
What happens when you are at a high altitude? Body adapts to high altitudes by producing more RBC. More RBC=More oxygen.
Anemia low iron levels resuls in: -fewer then normal blood cells -lack of energy due to less oxygen being transported to tissues for cellular respiration.
Leukemia -cancer of WBC's - associated with rapid and uncontrolled cell production
plaque made up of fats, cholesterol, calcium, & cell debris.
Plaque Accumunlation results in... -narrowing of arteries -artery becomes rigid= increase BP & potential blockage.
Altherosclerosis -hardening of arteries due to accumul;ation of fatty deposits. -blood vessel disease.
Coronary heart disease -heart disease -restrict blood flow through coronary arteries resulting in chest pain and heart attack.
Heart Attack -clot in a coronary artery cuts of blood supply to heart muscle & tissue dies. -heart disease
Sroke -Blood Vessel disease -sudden lose of brain function caused by an interuption in blood flow to brain

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
