ETM Vascular System

Vascular/Circulatory System for exercise to music qualification

QuestionAnswer
What is the vascular system? It is a system of veins and arteries through which the heart pumps blood throughout the body
What is the purpose of the vascular system? The vascular system involves the exchange and transport of materials such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, between the blood and tissues. It takes place in the capillaries.
Describe the role of arteries. Arteries take blood away from the heart. They have smooth but thick muscular walls and elastic connective tissue, that can withstand and maintain pressure.
What is the importance of blood pressure? Blood pressure enables the circulating blood to move upwards against gravity as well as forcing blood through capillaries.
If arteries become arterioles, what to veins become as they decrease in size? Venules
Describe the characteristics of veins. Carry blood under low pressure from the capillaries back to the heart. They have thin fibrous walls and one way valves at regular intervals to prevent the back flow of blood.
What is venous return? The amount of blood returned to the heart by the veins.
What type of exchange occurs in capillaries? What is ........? Diffusion occurs in the capillaries, as they are only one cell thick. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a greater concentration to an area of lesser concentration.
What can happen to our vascular system with age? Blood vessel walls can become less elastic and less efficient at carrying blood. There can also be a build up of a cholesterol containing material which prevents circulation, this is called atherosclerosis.
What is Pulmonary Circulation? The flow of blood from the right side of the heart- to the lungs- and then back to the left side of the heart.
What is Systemic Circulation? The flow of blood from the left side of the heart- to the body- and then back to the right side of the heart.
