Chapter 3

QuestionAnswer
What are the three main parts of a cell? Nucleus, Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm
What is found in the cytoplasm of a cell? Organelles
What is the purpose of the cell membrane? It regulates the the movement of substances in and out of the cell
The basic framework of the cell membrane consists of....? A double layer of phospholipids
Besides networks of organelles and membranes, what else does the cytoplasm consist of? A cytoskeleton, and a clear liquid called cytosol
made up of membranes, flattened sacs, and vesicles, and provides a tubular transport system inside the cell. Endoplasmic Reticulum
What makes a rough ER and what is its function? Ribosomes. It functions in protein synthesis.
What makes a smooth ER and what is its function? Lack of Ribosomes. It functions in lipid synthesis.
What found with ER and are scattered throughout the cytoplasm. They are composed of protein and RNA and provide a structural support for the RNA molecules that come together in protein synthesis Ribosomes
The Golgi Apparatus is composed of what? Flattened sacs
What does the Golgi Apparatus do? Refines packages, modifies and delivers proteins
Powerhouse of the cell Mitochondria
Contains enzymes needed for aerobic respiration Mitochondria
What are lysosomes and what do they do? are the "garbage disposals" of the cell and contain digestive enzymes to break up old cell components and bacteria
contain enzymes that function in the synthesis of bile acids, breakdown of lipids, degradation of rare biochemicals, and detoxification of alcohol peroxisomes
What is a cetrosome? is a structure made up of two hollow cylinders called centrioles that function in the separation of chromosomes during cell division
Form from part of the cell membrane or golgi and store materials vesicles
condensed dna is referred to as? chromosomes
consists of loosely coiled fibers of protein and dna chromatin
