SimpleCarbohydrates

QuestionAnswer
Simple carbohydrates are made of ___ _____ _________ and are the most ______ ______ source for organisms. 1-2 sugar molecules; common energy
Carbohydrates are compounds made from ______, ________, and ______. carbon; hydrogen; oxygen
What is the general ratio of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in carbohydrates? 1:2:1
What are the building blocks of carbohydrates? monosaccharides
What do monosaccharides (single sugars) usually have? 5-6 carbon atoms formed in a ring structure.
Scientists often leave the corners of shapes empty in chemical/structural diagrams to represent ______ _____. carbon atoms
What do organisms break down carbohydrates into? Glucose; provides chemical energy to organisms.
What monosaccharide is central to all organisms? Glucose; the main carbohydrate converted into energy.
Does glucose bond with itself and other monosaccharides to form other carbohydrates? Yes.
What is a common monosaccharide found in fruits? Fructose, natural carbohydrate loved by primates, including humans.
What has the same chemical form as glucose, but has a different structural form? Fructose.
What does 'DNA' and 'RNA' stand for? deoxyribonucleic acid; ribonucleic acid.
What are deoxyriboses and riboses? Monosaccharides with 5 carbon atoms.
nucleic acids: Molecules that contain/implement genetic control over cells.
What is the function of DNA? Holds instructions for building proteins.
What is the function of RNA? Integral to the synthesis/organization of proteins
What forms when two monosaccharides form a chemical bond? A disaccharide.
What is sucrose? Table sugar; composed of glucose and fructose.
What causes cavities? The bacteria that feed off left-over sugar on teeth; NOT sugar itself.
What is lactose? Lactose is a dissaccharide sugar found in milk; often used to feed offspring of many mammals.
What is lactose comprised of? Glucose and galactose.
Is milk the only natural source of lactose? Yes.
Why are some people lactose intolerant? These people have a minor chemical structural detail that prevents them from breaking down lactose, making them sick whenever they eat food containing lactose.
What is deoxyribose? A monosaccharide; the sugar component of DNA.
What is ribose? A monosaccharide; the sugar component of RNA.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
