Ecology vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Trophic Level Is the position of the food chain in the organism.
Tolerance The ability to take unusually large amounts of drugs.
Symbiosis The relation between two different species of organisms.
Population All the inhabitants of a particular town, area, or country.
Parasitism Living as a parasite of an organism.
Niche A shallow recess, esp. one in a wall to display a statue or other ornament.
Mutualism The doctrine that mutual dependence is necessary to social well-being.
Limiting Factor A factor present in an environment that controls a process, particularly the growth, abundance or distribution of a population of organisms in an ecosystem.
Heterotroph An organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.
Habitat A natural environment of an animal or plant.
Food Web A system of where there are two or more people or things depending on animals in the food chain as food.
Food Chain A series of animals using other animals smaller than them as a food source.
Ecosystem A community of organisms and how they interact and their physical environment.
Decomposer An organism, esp. a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate, that decomposes organic material.
Commensalism An association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm.
Climax Community An association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm.
Biotic Factor- A factor created by a living thing or any living component within an environment.
Biosphere The regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth (or analogous parts of other planets) occupied by living organisms.
Biomass The total mass of organisms in a given area or volume.
Community All the people living in a particular area or place.
Autotroph An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide. Compare with heterotroph.
Abiotic Factor Are all the nonliving parts of an organisms environment.
Carry Capacity biological species in an environment is the maximum population size of the species that The environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water and other necessities available in the environment.
Carnivore an animal that feeds on flesh
Herbivore an animal that feeds on plants.
Omnivore an animal or person that eats food of both plant and animal origin.
Scavenger an animal that feeds on carrion, dead plant material, or refuse.
Demography study of statistics such as births, deaths, income, or the incidence of disease, which illustrate the changing structure of human populations
