Biology 150 Ch. 26

Key Terms for Bio 150

QuestionAnswer
Population Consists of all the members of a particular species that live within an ecosystem.
Community A group of interacting populations.
Ecosystem Includes all the living and nonliving components of a defined geographical area.
Ecology The study of the interrelationships of organisms with each other and with their nonliving environment.
Biotic Potential The theoretical maximum rate at which a population could increase, assuming ideal conditions that allow a maximum birth rate and a minimum death rate.
Environmental Resistance Refers to the curbs on population growth that are set by the living and nonliving environment.
Exponential Growth A pattern of continuously accelerating increase in population size.
Invasive Species Organisms with a high biotic potential that are introduced into ecosystems where they did not evolve and where they encounter little environmental resistance.
Logistic Population Growth Characteristic of populations that increase up to the maximum number that their environment can sustain, and then stabilize.
Density Independent Limit population regardless of the population density. Ex. Climate and Weather.
Density Dependent Increase in effectiveness as the population density increases. Ex. Nutrients, energy, and space.
Predators Organisms that eat other organisms called prey.
Population Cycles Increase in predators results in a decrease in prey, which in turn results in a decrease of predators due to the lack of sustenance.
Competition The interaction among individuals who attempt to use the same limited resource, limits population size in a density-dependent manner.
Interspecific Competition Competition between individuals of different species.
Intraspecific Competition Competition among individuals of the same species.
Scramble Competition A free for all with resources as the prize.
Contest Competition Social or chemical interactions determine access to important resources.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
