peripheral nervous system carries sensory messages: TO the CNS
cerebral cortex cerebrum's outer layer of nerve cell bodies: also called gray matter
cerebral cortex is the center for humans' highest functions governing thought memory reasoning sensation voluntary movement
Each half of the cerebrum is a hemisphere
Each hemisphere is divided into four lobes: frontal parietal temporal occipital
In addition to the cerebral cortex, the CNS has other vital coponents: thalamus hypothalamus cerebellum midbrain and pons medulla spinal cord
Frontal lobe fx personality behavior emotion intellectual fxs
Broca's area of cerebral cortex motor speech
precentral gyrus of cerebral cortex primary motor area
postcentral gyrus of cerebral cortex primary sensory area
parietal lobe fx sensation
Wernicke's area fx speech comprehension
occipital lobe fx visual reception
cerebellum motor coordination equilibrium balance
temporal lobe fx hearing taste smell
