Vocab Word:Definition:
1) Organic Compound A compound that is primarily made up of carbon atoms.
2) Monomer Smaller, simpler compounds that many carbon compounds are made up of.
3) Polymer A molecule that is made up of repeated, linked units.
4) Condensation Reaction The chemical reaction that links monomer to polymer molecules.
5) ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) One of the certain compounds that store a large amount of energy in their overall structure.
6) Carbohydrate Organic compounds composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in a ratio of about one carbon atom to two hydrogen atoms to one oxygen atom.
7) Monosaccharide A monomer of a carbohydrate. Also, a simple sugar, and contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in a ratio of 1:2:1.
8) Disaccharide A double sugar formed by two monosaccharides by combining in a condensation reaction.
9) Polysaccharide A complex molecule composed of three or more monosaccharides.
10) Protein An organic compound composed of mostly of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.
11) Amino Acid Monomers linked together to form proteins.
12) Peptide bond two amino acids form a covalent bond through a certain condensation reaction.
13) Polypeptide A very long chain of amino acids. Proteins are composed of one or more _____.
14) Enzyme RNA or protein molecules that act as biological catalysts. Essential for the functioning of any cell.
15) Substrate The substance that is being acted upon by and enzyme or another catalyst.
16) Active Site The region of an enzyme molecule where a substance (a substrate) is bounded and acted upon by the enzyme molecule.
17) Lipid Large, nonpolar organic molecules.
18) Steroid Molecules that are made up of four fused carbon rings with various functions attached to them.
19) Nucleic Acid Very large and complex organic molecules that store and transfer important information within the cell.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
