| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is an epithelial cell? | A body cell that is found covering the body or lining a hollow organ. |
| What are the two forms of epithelium? | 1) covering and lining 2) glandular |
| Where is extra-cellular material found? | outside of cells |
| What is a cell junction? | A place where 2 adjacent cells come into contact |
| What is an apical surface? | the surface of a cell that faces open space (either a hollow area of an organ, or the outside of the body.) |
| What is a lateral surface? | the surface of a cell that faces cells that are next to each other |
| What is a basal surface? | the surface of a cell that faces the basement membrane. |
| What is basement membrane? | extra cellular material that connects the epithelial cells to the underlying connective tissue. |
| What does avascular mean? | without arteries or veins |
| How do epithelial cells get blood supply and relief of waste? | diffusion with the underlying connective tissue |
| How are squamous cells shaped? | thin, flat, like tiles |
| What is the function of a squamous cell? | let matter diffuse through them (both directions) |
| How are cuboidal cells shaped? | as tall as they are wide |
| What is the function of a cubiodal cell? | Secretion and or absorption |
| What is a microvilli? | a finger-like extension of the cell that specializes in absorbing material. the microvilli increases the surface area of the cell |
| How are columnar cells shaped? | taller than they are wide |
| What is the function of a columnar cell? | Protect underlying cells, also potentially absorption and or secretion |
| What is a cilia? | A fingerlike extension of a cell. The cilia all move in unison to make substances move across the surface of the epithelium |
| What is the shape of a transitional cell? | their shape changes from cuboidal to squamous as the tissue is stretched |
| What is the function of a transitional cell? | to allow the epithelium to stretch as needed |
| What is a goblet cell? | an epithelial cell that is specialized to secrete substances |
| What is an endocrine gland? | An epithelial cell that is specialized to secrete substances (hormones) into the bloodstream. |
| What is an exocrine gland? | An epithelial cell that is specialized to secrete substances into ducts that lead out of the body or into hollow organs. |
