summer solstice happens around June 21st; "sun stops" over the Tropic of Cancer; the longest day of the year
winter solstice happens around December 21st; "sun stops" over the Tropic of Capricorn; the shortest day of the year
vernal equinox happens around March 21st; 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night
autumnal equinox happens around September 21st; 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night
