The scientific study of living organisms and their interactions with the environment. Biology
In biology, the smallest unit that can performed all life processes; cells are covered by a membrane and have a nucleus and cytoplasm. Cell
The process of producing offspring. Reproduction
The sum of all chemical processes occur in an organism. Metabolism
The maintenance of a constant internal state that is maintained in a changing environment by continually making adjustments to the internal and external environment. Homeostasis
A segment of DNA that is located in a chromosome and that codes for a specific hereditary trait. Gene
The passing of genetic traits from parents to offspring. Heredity
A change in the nucleotide-base sequence of a gene or DNA molecule. Mutation
A change in the charateristics of a population from one generation to the next; the gradual development of organisms. Evolution
A group of organisms that are closely related and naturally mate to produce offspring. Species
The process by which individuals that have favorabole variations and are better adaptted to their environment survive and reproduced more sucessfully that less well adapted individuals do. Natural Selection
The study of the interactions of living organisms with one another and with their environment. Ecology
The complete genetic material contained in an individual. Genome
Human immunodeficiency virus, the virus that causes AIDS. HIV
A tumor in which the cells begin dividing at an uncontrolled rate and become invasive. Cancer
A fatal genetic disorder in which excessive amounts of mucus are secreted, blocking intestinal and bronchial ducts and causing difficulty in breathing. Cystic Fibrosis
The replacement of a defective gene with a normal verison. Gene Therapy
The process of obtaining information by using the senses. Observation
A theory or explanation that is based on observations and that can be tested. Hypothesis
A statement made in advance that expresses the results that will be obtained from testing a hypothesis if the hypothsis is supported; the excepted outcome if a hypothesis is accurate. Prediction
A value used to express the acidity or alkalinity of a solution; it's defined as the logarithm of the reciprocal of the concentration of hydronium ions; a pH of 7 is neutral, a pH of less than 7 is acidic, and a pH of greater than 7 is basic. pH
A procedure that is carried out under controlled conditions to discover, demonstrate, or test a fact, theory, or general truth. Experiment
In an experiment, a group that serves as a standard of comparison with another group to which the control group is identical except for one factor. Control Group
The factor that is deliberately manipulated in an experiment. Independent Variable
In an experiment, the variable that is changed or determined by manipulation of one or more factors. Dependent Variable
An explanation for some phenomenon that is based on observation, experimentation, and reasoning. Theory
