DefinitionTerm
A short term state of the atmosphere, including temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and visability at a specific location and time. Weather
The average weather condition in a general area over a long period of time. Climate
The major difference between weather and climate. Time
The distance north or south from the equator; expressed in degrees. Latitude
An imaginary line, given the latitude of 0 degrees, that divides the Earth into two equal halves. Equator
The northern (top) half of the Earth that includes everything inbetween 0 and 90 degrees north latitudinally. Northern Hemisphere
The southern (bottom) half of the Earth that includes everything inbetween 0 and 90 degrees south latitudinally. Southern Hemisphere
The major reason for seasonal variance of climatic conditions. Tilt of the Earth
Winter, spring, summer and fall. Four seasons
Winds that blow mainly from one direction during a given period of time. Prevailing Winds
The height of any given object above sea level. Elevation
A horizontal movement of ocean water that is caused by wind and that occurs at or on the ocean's surface. Surface Currents
A large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities. Biome
The three major climate zones. Tropical, temperate, and polar.
