Cell S&F Vocab
Cell Structure and Function Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a eukaryote? | A eukaryote is a complex cell that contains a nucleus. A eukaryote also contains several other organelles with different functions. A eukaryote is the basis of plants, animals, fungi, and protists. |
| What is a prokaryote? | A prokaryote is a very basic cell with no nucleaus. The DNA is floating in the cytoplasm where it is made into protein. A prokaryote is the basis of bacteria and archae. |
| What is the nucleus? | The nucleas is the headquarters of the cell and control the function of the cell. The nucleus houses the DNA. |
| What is the nuclear envolope? | The nuclear envelope is the double-layered membrane which keeps the DNA inside the nucleus and allows the mRNA out. |
| What is an organelle? | An organelle is one of the many additional components of a cell. |
| What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum? | In the endoplasmic reticulum ribosomes convert mRNA into protein and proteins fold and become fully functional. Part of the ER also synthesizes lipids. |
| What is the Golgi Apparatus? | The golgi apparatus is the packaging center of the cell. As proteins leave they are packaged in vesicles. |
| What is a Lysosome? | With their acidic environment, lysosomes digest the food of the cell. The lysosome has a membrane to protect from self-digestion. |
| What is the Mitochondria? | The mitchondria is the power-house of the cell and supplies energy to the rest of the cell. |
| What is cellular respiration? | Cellular respiration is the process in which the mitochondria provides energy. |
| List all 4 structures that are common to all cells. | 1. Cell membrane 2. Ribosomes 3. Cytoplasm 4. DNA |
