| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is science? | the study of the natural world |
| What is an observation? | Information gathered using your senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing) |
| What is an inference? | an attempt to interpret an observation (what you think is happening based on your observation) |
| Define data. | any information or observations gathered during an experiment. |
| Define hypothesis. | a testable explanation for an observation. |
| What kind of data is QUANTITATIVE DATA? | numbers and measurements (like height, weight, length, volume, etc) |
| what kind of data is QUALITATIVE DATA? | observations, descriptions |
| What is a controlled experiment? | An experiment in which you test only one thing at a time and everything else stays the same. (aka only has one INDEPENDENT variable) |
| What is a variable? | anything that changes during an experiment, whether you changed it on purpose or something that changed on accident. |
| What is an independent variable? | This is what you are testing in your experiment. The independent variable is not influenced by anything else in your experiment. For example, testing the affect of different amounts of light on plant growth. |
| What is a dependent variable? | This is what you are looking for (what you measure) to see if your experiment works or not. It changes in response to what you are testing. If your independent variable is the amount of light, then the dependent variable is how much the plant grows. |
| What is another name for hidden variables? | errors |
| What is the control setup of an experiment? | It is the part of the experiment that has the most "normal" or "expected" outcomes. You will compare your control results with your experiment results to see how it worked. |
| What are constants? | They are things in your experiment that stay the same throughout the experiment and control. |
| What is another way to say independent variable? | manipulated variable |
| What is another way to say dependent variable? | Responding variable |
