QuestionAnswer
RBC Erythrocytes - small, biconcave, disk-shaped cells W/O nuclei. Contains Protein globin, complex iron-containing structure, association with Oxygen. Transports Oxygen.
WBC Leukocytes - Larger, have Nucleus, appear translucent. Fight infections (2 ways): Phagocytic and engulf infectious pathogens. Either produce antibodies, molecules that combine with foreign substances to inactivate them. OR they kill cells outright.
Platelets Thrombocytes - fragments of giant cells present only in bone marrow. If a blood vessel is damaged, platelets form a plug that seals the vessel. Injured tissue release molecules that help the clotting process.
Lymph clear, watery, yellowish fluid. Lymphatic vessels absorb fat molecules from the small intestine.
Muscular Tissue composed of Muscle Fibers. Include Skeletal, Smooth, and Cardiac.
Muscle Fibers contain protein filaments (actin and myosin filaments)
Skeletal Muscle Voluntary. Attached by tendons, to the bones of the skeleton. Contraction under Voluntary control. Striated.
Smooth (Visceral) Muscle Lacks Striations. Involuntary. Found in walls of Viscera (Intestine, Bladder, etc) and Blood Vessels, Contracts slower than Skeletal, but lasts longer.
Cardiac Muscle Found ONLY in walls of heart. Contraction pumps blood and accounts for the heartbeat. Striated. Involuntary. Has single, centrally placed nucleus. Cells are separated and bound at INTERCALATED DISKS.
Nervous Tissue consists of Nerve cells (neurons), Neuroglia (cells that support and nourish the neurons)
Neuron specialized cell (3 parts): dendrites, cell body, axon. Fiers bound by connective tissue form nerves.
Dendrite extension that receives signals from sensory receptors.
Cell Body contains most of the cell's cytoplasm and nucleus.
Axon extension that conducts nerve impulses.
Nervous system has 3 functions... Sensory input, Integration of data, and motor output. Nerves conduct impulses from sensory receptors Integration occurs in spinal cord and brain

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
