what is latitude? lines that run east to west
what is longitude? lines that run north to south
what is the prime meridian? The prime meridian is the zero (0) line of longitude.
what is the equator? The equator is the imaginary line that circles Earth at it widest part-around its middle-at an equal distance from both the North and South Poles.
what is geography? the study of the earths surface (land, air, water) and peoples relationship with their environment.
what are the 2 types of geography? Physical & cultural.
what is archipelago? a group of islands.
what are the 5 themes of geography? location, place, human environment interactions, movement, & regions.
what are the 2 types of locations? absolute & relative.
what does ATL mean? break in bulk.
what are the five lines of latitude? 0*...Equator , 23.5*N...Tropic of cancer, 66.5*N...arctic circle, 23.5*S... tropic of capricorn, 66.5*S...anarctic circle.
What line is at 0*? The equator.
What line is at 23.5*N ? tropic of cancer.
What line is at 66.5*N? Arctic circle.
What line is at 23.5*S? Tropic of Capricorn.
What line is at 66.5*S? antarctic circle.
What are the 3 climate zones? Tropical zone, Polar zones, & Temperate zones.
Where is the tropical zone? Between the Tropic of cancer & the tropic of Capricorn.
Where is the Polar zones? Between 66.5* and 90*.
Where is the Temperate zones at? Between 23.5* and 66.5*.
What are the types of precipitation? rain, sleet, snow, hail.
What are the three climate controls? Latitude, elevation, & proximity (closeness) to water & land.
whats elevation? The distance below or above sea level.
what are the 3 types of resources? natural, capital, & human.
What are renewable natural resources? soil, water, sun.
what are non-renewable natural resources? fossil fuels (coal,oil,naturel), metals & elements ( iron, copper, aluminum, uranium, gold.
what are capital resources? money & machines.
what are human resources? people.
What are the 3 energy resources? fossil fuels, nuclear energy, & other sources.
what are fossil fuels? oil & coal.
What are nuclear energies? fission.
what are the other sources? hydroelectric power, geothermal power, solar energy.
What is demography? a study of populations.
What type of populations does demography study? birth, marriage, & death rates.
What are cultural traits? language, skills, & customs.
what does non-material mean? ideas.
What does material mean? objects.
whats cultural diffusion? the spreading of one person's or society's cultural traits to another.
whats cultural hearth? The place where important ideas begin.
what are the 4 characteristics of a country? clearly defined territory, population, sovereignty (freedom), & government.
what are the 2 stages of economic development? developing countries & developed countries.
What are Types of economic activities? primary, secondary, & tertiary.
What are Primary activities? farming & fishing.
What are secondary activities? industry & manufacturing.
what are tertiary activities? 1)hunters, gatherers, & herders. 2)subsistence farming. 3)commercial farming.
