| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| angiocardiogram(angiogram) | xray study of the heart and major vessels performed after injection of a radiopaque dye into a vessel |
| arteriogram | xray study of an artery |
| stress test | to assess the severity of symptomatic and asymptomatic cardiac disease; client pedals a stationary bicycle or walks on a treadmill while ECG and blood pressure measurements are taken |
| echocardiography | uses sound waves to produce a three dimensional view of the heart and its bloodflow |
| cardiac catheterization | performed to obtain information about congential or aquired heart defects, measure oxygen concentration, determine cardiac output, or assess the status of the heart's structures and chambers |
| ischemia | lack of blood supply |
| angioplasty | widens the artery's opening(lumen) and improves blood flow to the heart muscles |
| atherectomy | a type of angioplasty that involves use of a cutting device(rotoblator) with a rotating shaver(burr) at the tip of the catheter; used to shave away plaque from the coronary artery |
| arteriosclerosis | applies to several pathologic conditions in which the walls of the arteries thicken, harden, and lose elasticity |
| atherosclerosis | most commom type of arteriosclerosis; characterized by fatty deterioration of the arterial smooth muscle walls |
| stenosis | lumen of the arteries narrow |
| hypertrophy | enlargement of the heart muscle |
| dysrhythmia | an irregularity in the heartbeat's rhythm |
| arrhythmia | without a heartbeat |
| heart block | not a disease in itself but is associated with many types of heart disease |
| fibrillation | quivering of muscle fibers |
| cardioversion | changing of the cardiac dysrhythmia, electrically or through medication administration |
| atrial ablation | procedure that uses a catheter to determine the location of the abnormality of the heart rhythm |
| hemodynamic monitoring | an arterial catheter such as Swan-Ganz catheter is used to measure internal pressures of the heart |
| myocarditis | inflammation of the heart's muscular walls |
| pancarditis | imflammation of the entire heart |
| endocarditis | infection of the endocardium |
| pericarditis | an inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart |
| angina pectoris(angina) | means "pain in the chest" |
| acute coronary syndrome(ACS) | a group of coronary disorders such as acute myocardial infarction, diagnostic ST changes on an ECG, and unstable angina |
| thromboplebitis | inflammation of the wall of a vein, in which one or more clots form |
| plebitis | inflammation of a blood vessel without clot formation |
| embolus | blood clot that is carried through the circulation to some vital organ; it can lodge in a blood vessel and cause death |
| claudication | cramps that occur because of an insufficient supply of oxygen, as in intermittent claudication |
| aneurysm | outpouching of a blood vessel |
| hemiplegia | paralysis of one side of the body |
| aphasia | unable to speak |
| hemianopsia | blindness in half of the visual field of one or both eyes |
| cardiology | field of medicine that examines the cardio system and its disorders |
