Foods that have adverse reactions with certain drugs

| TYPE 1 Substances in direct physical contact with each other (outside the body) | Precipitates in the TPN solution. Example is Calcium & Phosphate - will cause microvascular pulmonary emboli. 2 Substances too small to see, crystalize as they mix in the TPN tubing, colorless and too small to see. |
| TYPE 2 Interaction takes place when meds and nutrients are taken by mouth or enteral route | Example: Grapefruit juice can cause blood levels of many drugs to be elevated. Effect can last 72 hrs |
| Drugs that have adverse reaction with Grapefruit Juice | Felodipine- hypertension drug Diazepam- (Valium) anti-convulsant Simvastatin- lowers bad cholesterol |

| Drugs taken with High Fiber Meals | Digoxin is used to treat congestive heart failure and to slow the heart rate in patients with atrial fibrillation |
| Drugs with adverse reaction with Cranberry juice | Warfarin; Risk is hemorrhaging. Avoid foods in vitamin K |
