KTC-Dextrose

QuestionAnswer
Dextrose 50% in water trade name: D50
Class: Carbohydrate, hypertonic solution
Description: Dextrose is a simple sugar that the body can rapidly metabolize to create energy.
Onset/Duration: 1 minute; depends on degree of hypoglycemia
Indications: Hypoglycemia, Refractory Cardiac Arrest (controversial)
Contraindications: Increased ICP, Intracranial Hemorrhage
Precautions: Determine blood glucose level before administration, Ensure good venous access
Adverse Reaction: Warmth, pain, Thrombophlebitis, Rhabdomyolitis, Burning from medication infusion
Dosage/Route: 12.5-25gm Slow IV, D25% for pediatrics, D10% for Neonates and Infants
