What is the meaning of Mental Health? If you believe your not healthy you are then more susceptible to getting sick.
what is the meaning of spiritual Health? religious/spiritual people tend to be more upbeat,positive, and possibly healther.
what is the difference in pathoginic & opportunistic pathogen Patho= disease causing, & OPP.= generally harmless in its normal habitat but can become pathogenic in host with weak immune system.
what is the meaning of virulent? agent is very possible to cause infection.
What are the 4 major portal of entries? 1.placenta, 2.mucous membrane, 3.parenteral, 4.skin.
What is the difference in contamination & Infection? Contamination= agent is merely on the body. Infection= agent has evaded external defenses and has entered the body.
Name a pathogen that can cross the placenta? Histeria Mono.
What is intoxication? effects on the body by a toxin produced by a biological agent.
What agent causes Toxic Shock Syndrome? Staphylococcus aureus.
what are 4 virulence factors? agent has to: 1.colonization(adhesion to cell), 2.evasion of hosts immune response, 3.entry into & exit out of cells, 4.has to obtain nutrition from host.
What are toxins? chemicals that harm tissues or trigger host immune responses that can cause damage.
What is the meaning of toxemia? refers to toxins in the bloodstream that are carried beyond the site of infection.
Name two types of toxins? Exotoxins and endotoxins.
What are endotoxins? the LPS part of the bacterias cell wall of gram neg. bacteria, they leave the toxins in the host to cause an intese immune response in the host.
what are the 3 enzymes that are mostly focused on? 1.Lipase, 2.coagulase, 3.Hyaluronidase
what is the function of coagulase? clots plasma.
What is Oleic acid? it is produced by the skin & consists of fatty acids & have antimicrobial properties.
Name the 5 emmunoglobulins 1.IGM, 2.IGG, 3.IGA, 4.IGD, 5.IGE
What are the non-specific physical barriers/first line of defense? 1.skin, 2.mucous membranes
What are the 4 functions of the complement cascade? 1.neutralizes viruses, 2.enhances phagocytosis, 3.damages plasma membranes, 4.can destroy(lyse) microorganisms.
