antianxiety (benzodiazepines)

LIBRIUM (chlordiazepoxide) & VALIUM (diazepam) | use-anxiety/sedation/alcohol withdrawal/seizures, may become toxic c elderly, addictive, *alcohol increases cns depression & cigs increase clearance* |
alprazolam (XANAX), clonazepam (KLONOPIN), lorazepam (ATIVAN), oxazepam (SERAX) = "-pam & -lam" ("PAM & my LAMb have anxiety") | safer for elderly, no alcohol/depressants, check renal & hepatic function, don't d/c abruptly, addictive |
mixazalam (VERSED) "moments not remembered" | sedation --- remember if pt is on conscious sedation or general anesthesia they MUST be 1:1!, monitor for resp depression |
BUSPIRONE (buspar) | little sedation, takes 3wks to be effective, NOT for PRN!, used for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), not addictive, no alcohol or GRAPEFRUIT, monitor for suicidal ideations/worsening depression |
hydroxyzine (VISTARIL) (atarax) | not addictive, can be used for indefinite periods, monitor WBC's |
