Immune system Unit 4

The make up of the immune system

QuestionAnswer
Blood Fluid-plasma, Cells-RBC (erythrocytes, carry oxygen through hemoglobin ETS) and WBCs (leukocytes, 5-types), and Platelets (thrombocytes)
White Blood Cells Granulocytes-neutraphile, basophile, esinophile, Agranulocytes-Lymphocytes and monocytes
Granulocytes Neutraphile, basophile, eosinophile
Agranulocytes lymphocytes and monocytes
Neutraphile WBC and is a granulocytes, 4X larger than RBCs, made in bone marrow, 40-60% of circulating WBCs, functions as a fagicytosis
Basophile WBC, is a granulocytes, covered by dark staning granules, made in bone marrow, 2% of WBCs, function is histamine release.
Eosinophile WBC Basic, stains red/orange and acidic in nature, red/orange granules on its surface, made in bone marrow, 10% or less of WBCs, function: infection-parasites and allergic reaction
Lymphocyte WBC and is an agranulocytes. 20-40% of WBCs, made in bone marrow-> moves to WBC lymphatics -> then bllod. Function is to make antibodies, responsible for our acquired immunity
Monocyte WBC Produced in liver and spleen (NOT in bone marrow), largest. 10% WBCs, functions as a phagocytosis
Red blood cell the only cell in the body that has an antigen attached to the surface which is the type of blood you have. Erythrocyte, serves as final ETS, cellular respiration to produce energy, final electron receptor. RBCs produced in bone marrow, O thru hemoglobin
Blood type A antigen on surface, circulating type B antibodies
Blood type B antigen on surface, ciculating type A antibodies
Blood type AB anitgen NO circulating antibodies
O has NO antigens but both A & B antibodies
O is the universal donor
AB is the universal recipient
Rhesus monkey anti D blood type, 85% ppl reacted against Rhesus monkey blood
Erthroblatosis FATAL
Rhogam an antibody blocker given in 3rd trimester or w/in 72 hrs before child birth.
Hemolytic disease disease of a newborn where the newborn needs a blood transfusion b/c mother had RH + and baby had RH-
Specific Immune response when lymphocytes are called upon to recognize foreign substances or particles and act to elimate them
