Mr. Biando's Lab - Layers of the Earth

TermDefinitions
Crust The thin and solid outermost layer of the Earth above the mantle.
Mantle The layer of molten rock between the Earth's crust and core.
Core The central part of the Earth below the mantle.
Oceanic Crust The dense part of the crust composed of twice as much iron, calcium, and magnesium.
Continental Crust The lesser dense crust composed of oxygen, silicon, and aluminium.
Magma Hot dense melted rock composed of a high concentration of magnesium located within the mantle.
Lithosphere The solid, outer layer of the Earth that consists of the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle.
Asthenosphere The hot soft layer of the mantle on which the tectonic plates move.
Mesosphere The strong, lower part of the mantle between the asthenosphere and the outer core where heated convection currents cycle magma which moves the gooey athenosphere material.
Outer core The hot liquid layer of the core that lies beneath the mantle which surrounds and flows around the inner core.
Crust The layer that is less than 1% of the Earth's mass.
Mantle The layer that makes up 67% of the Earth's mass.
Core The part of the Earth that takes up about 33% of the Earth's mass.
Tectonic Plate A block or piece of the lithosphere that consists of the crust and the rigid, outermost part of the mantle.
Seismograph An instrument that measures seismic waves.
Seismic waves Vibrations that travel through the Earth's crust.
Seismologist A scientist who studies seismic waves.
