Gross Anatomy of the Muscular System (Part 1-Axial)
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Muscle Fiber | The basic functional unit of skeletal muscle, the same as a muscle cell. |
| Endomysium | A layer of connective tissue that encloses each fiber. |
| Perimysium | A layer of connective tissue that encloses each muscle fascicle (fibers organized into bunches). |
| Epimysium | A layer of connective tissue that encloses each whole muscle. |
| Tendons | Cordlike dense regular connective tissue that that attaches skeletal msucles to the bones. |
| Aponeuroses | Membranous sheets that attach skeletal muscles to the bones. |
| Origin | When an action occurs, this bony attachment remains fixed or stationary. |
| Insertion | The bony attachment that moves when an action occurs. |
| Prime movers (Agonists) | A muscle that directly brings about a specific action. |
| Antagonists | A muscle that directly opposes a specific action. |
| Synergists | "Working together". Muscles that promote or assist in a specific action, or by reducing unnecessary movements while the action is performed. |
| Fixators | A special class of synergists, these muscles stabilizes joints or muscles origins so prime movers can act more efficiently. |
