What is the thyroid's function? Increase metabolic rates and the oxidation of sugars
Where is the thyroid located? In the throat
What 2 hormones does the thyroid secrete? T3 and T4
which one is mostly secreted from the thyroid and why? T4/thyroxine is secreted more than T3 because T3 contains iodine that is in salty foods and we do not need to produce much of it. Thyroxine is used to inhibit the hypothalamus when there the metabolic rates are normal.
What parts are involved with the thyroid? Hypothamalus, Pituitary Gland, Thyroid.
What does the hypothalamus secrete? TRH(thyroid releasing hormone) so the message of releasing hormones starts
What does the pituitary gland secrete? TSH(thyroid stimulating hormone) so the message will get to the thyroid and secrete T4
What does the thyroid secrete after the pituitary gland? T4/thyroxine
What happens when there are high levels of T4 in the body? The body will use T4 and inhibit the TRH to stop producing anymore T4.
Where is the parathyroid located and how many are there? in the thyroid, there are 4 of them shaped like circles
What is the function of parathyroids? Increase calcium levels by signalling the kidneys and the intestines to retain calcium. it decreases the phosphate levels
What hormone is associated with the parathyroid? PTH(parathyroid hormone) it stimulates the kidneys and intestines to retiain calcium. Promotes the release of calcium from the bones if there's not enough in the blood.
