| Term | Definition |

| Thunderstorm | A usually brief, heavy storm that consists of rain, strong winds, lightning, and thunder. |
| Lightning | An electrical discharge that takes place between two oppositely charged surfaces, such as between a cloud and the ground, between two clouds, or between two parts of the same cloud. |
| Thunder | The sound caused by the rapid expansion of air along an electrical strike. |
| Flash Floods | Caused by heavy rains and is the leading cause of weather related deaths. |
| Cumulonimbus clouds | Tall dark clouds that are associated with unstable rising warm air and thunderstorms. |
| Tornadoes | A destructive, rotating column of air that has very high wind speeds, is visable as a funnel-shaped cloud, and touches the ground. |
| Hurricanes | A severe storm that develops over tropical oceans and whose strong winds of more than 120 km/h spiral in toward the intensely low pressure storm center. |
| Typhoon | Another name for a hurricane that forms in the western Pacific Ocean. |
| Storm surge | A wall of water that build up over the ocean because of the strong winds of hurricanes and causes major flooding. |
| Severe weather | What thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes are considered to be. |
| Tornado watch | A weather alert that lets people know that a tornado may happen. |
| Tornado warning | A weather alert that lets people know that a tornado has been spotted. |
| Flood safety | Seek high ground. |
| Hurricane safety | Seek shelter in covered well protected building. |
| Tornado safety | Seek shelter in a basement or cellar. |
| Thunderstorm safety | Seek shelter, but stay away from metal objects or tall trees. |
