Definition of Biology The scientific study of life
What are the seven properties of life? Order, Evolutionary adaptation, Response to the environment, Regulation, Energy processing, Growth and Development, and Reproduction
What are the levels of biological organization? Biosphere, Ecosystems, Communities, Populations, Organisms, Organ systems, Organs, Tissues, Cells, Organelles, Molecules
What is a population? The individuals of a certain species living within the bounds of a specified area.
What is a community? The entire array of organisms inhabiting a particular ecosystem.
DNA stands for.... Deoxyribonucleic Acid
What is the difference between Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic organisms? Prokaryotic cells are smaller, lack membrane bound organelles, and have a nucleus containing the cell's DNA.
Define emergent properties With each step upward in the hierarchy of biological order, novel properties emerge that are not present at the level just below
Reductionism is... Reducing complex systems to simpler components that are more manageable to study.
What is the goal of systems biology? to model the dynamic behavior of whole biological systems
Define negative feedback Accumulation of an end product of a process slows that process.
Define positive feedback An end product speeds up its production.
What is the current taxonomic scheme that organizes different species? (Hint: Begin with domain, end with species) Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What are the three domains of life? Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya
Who named the cell? Robert Hooke
What is a controlled experiment? An experiment where there is an experimental group which is compared with a control group.
