| Metamorphism | A Greek word that means "changed shape". |
| Metamorphic Rock | Rock that is formed deep within the Earth by extreme temperature and pressure. |
| Contact Metamorphism | Metamorphic rock that forms near igneous intrusions. |
| Regional Metamorphism | Metamorphic rock that forms when pressure builds up under other rock formations within the Earth's crust or by colliding with other large pieces of the crust. |
| Index Minerals | Minerals that form at known temperatures and pressure that help identify types of metamorphic rock. |
| Foliated | The texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains are arranged in planes or bands. |
| Non-foliated | The texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains are NOT arranged in planes or bands. |
| Deformation | The change in the shape of a rock caused by force placed on it. |
