Science study guide for the fossil and geologic time quiz (ch. 13 & 14)

QuestionAnswer
The time needed for a half-parent isotope to decay is called half-life
Gives the age of rocks in years absolute age
Older rocks lie under the younger rocks is called the Law of superposition
Thin film of carbon preserved as a fossil is called a carbon film

Which parts of organisms are most likely to fossilize? Hard parts such as shells, bones, and teeth.
How can fossils be used to understand the changes to Earth overtime Each fossil is fossilized in a rock layer and each rock layer has an age therefore you can determine the age of the fossil by finding out the age of the rock.
What is the difference betweena Geologic Era and Period? Periods are units of geologic time. A geologic Era is the division of time.
Precambiran Time: not many organisms were fossilized and not much is known about this time.
Paleozoic Era: many organisms were marine life and Trilobites were common life-forms.
Mesozoic Era: In the beginning of this time period the continents were all combined forming a land mass called Pangaea. In this Era reptiles were common life-forms.
