Rotation the turning of the Earth on it’s axis.

Day The amount of time the Earth takes to complete one rotation
Revolution the time it takes the Earth to travel (orbit) around the sun one
Summer Solstice When the sun reaches it’s in the sky, the North Pole is pointed 23 ½ * toward the sun. The longest day of the year in the Northern hemisphere and the shortest day in the southern hemisphere.
Winter Solstice The North Pole is tilted 23 ½ * away from the sun. The shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and the longest day of the year in the southern hemisphere.
Moon the Earth’s nearest neighbor in space.
Phases of the Moon moon appears to change shape in the sky. The revolution (trip around the Earth) of the moon causes the phases. The moon goes through all it’s phases every 29.5 days.
New Moon when the moon comes between the sun and the Earth. The side of the moon facing the Earth is in darkness. The moon is NOT visible.
Waxing the moon appears to be getting larger
Waxing Crescent the moon appears to be getting bigger, a thin sliver of moon is seen after the new moon, before the 1st quarter. Waxing Crescent – the moon appears to be getting bigger, a thin sliver of moon is seen after the new moon, before the 1st quarter.
1st Quarter after the waxing crescent –half of side of the moon can be seen
Crescent after the new moon, crescent shaped* thin sliver
Waxing Gibbous the moon appears to be getting after the 1st quarter and before the full moon Waxing Gibbous – the moon appears to be getting after the 1st quarter and before the full moon
Full Moon after the Waxing Gibbous, * all ONE side is seen.
Waning getting smaller
Last Quarter after Waning Gibbous,* ½ of the front side of the moon is seen.
Waning Crescent after the Last Quarter ,* thin sliver of moon can be seen, * moon appears to be getting smaller
Eclipse as the moon revolves around the Earth and the Earth and the moon together revolve around the sun, they sometimes block out some of the sun’s light / or “moonlight”.
Solar Eclipse when the new moon comes directly between the sun and the Earth, the sunlight is blocked from reaching the Earth.
Lunar Eclipse when the Earth comes directly between the sun and the full moon. Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow.
Earthshine the moon has a glow that is reflected light from the earth
Tides Rise and fall of the ocean’s caused by the moon’s gravitational pull on the Earth.
Springtides higher than normal high tide
Neaptides lower than normal high tide
