| air mass | large body of air that has the same characteristics of temperature and moisture as Earth's surface |
| front | the boundary between air masses that are different from each other |
| cyclone | area of low air pressure |
| anticyclone | area of high air pressure |
| tornado | a violent, whirling windstorm that crosses the land in a narrow path |
| hurricane | a large, severe storm that forms over tropical oceans and has winds of at least 120 km/h |
| meteorologist | scientist who studies the weather and uses information to provide forecasts |
| isobars | lines on a weather map that connect points having equal air pressure |
| isotherms | lines on a weather map that connect points having equal temperature |
| weather | state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place, including air pressure, temperature, moisture, wind, and precipitation |
| humidity | amount of water vapor in the air |
| dew point | temperature at which condensation forms from the moisture in the air |
| fog | stratus cloud that forms when air is cooled to the dew point near the ground |
| station model | indicates weather conditions at a specific location on a map using symbols |
| psychrometer | instrument used to measure humidity using a wet-bulb thermometer and a dry-bulb thermometer |
| barometer | instrument used to measure air pressure |
| cumulus | low level clouds that look like fluffy, rounded piles of cotton |
| cirrus | wispy, feathery clouds made mostly of ice crystals that form at high levels |
| stratus | clouds that form in flat layers |
