amylase an digestive enzyme in saliva.
esophagus a muscular tube that connects your mouth to your stomach
peristalsis a series of involuntary smooth muscle contractions along the walls of the digestive tract.
epiglottis the flap of cartilage that closes over the opening to the respitory tract as you swallow.
stomach a muscular pouchlike enlargement of the digestive tract.
pepsin an enzyme that begins the chemical digestion of proties in food.
small intestine a muscular tube about 6 m long.
pancreas a soft, flattened gland that secretes both digestive enzymes and hormones.
liver a large, complex, organ that has many functions.
bile a chemical substance that helps break down fats.
gallbladder bile is stored in this small organ.
villus a single projection on the lining of the small intestine that functions in the absorbtion of digested food.
large intestine a muscular tube that is also called the colon.
rectum the last part of thye digestive system.
mechanical digestion when food is broken down into smaller pieces by the action of muscles or teeth.
chemical digestion When food particles are broken down into smaller, more absorbable peices by the action of digestive enzymes.
