Lesson 5 Natural Disasters on Earth's Crust

What killed the people of Pompeii? Pyroclastic flow from Mt. Vesuvius.
When was Pompeii rediscovered? 1700s
When did Mt. Vesuvius erupt and bury Pompeii? 79 A.D.
Are there still people in those cement statues? No, those are cement molds of the air spaces the people made after they were covered by ash and then the body decomposed into the earth.
What state experienced an earthquake, volcano and tsunami in the 60s? Alaska 1964: tsunami and earthquake and 1969 volcanic eruption (Mt. Redoubt).
Where did the highest tsunami wave occur and how high was it? It was 524m high (almost as tall as the CN tower in Toronto). This happened in Alaska.
Can people on the beach tell the difference between an approaching wave and a tsunami when it is far away? No they can't. People can tell when the wave is very close to shore and by then, you must run very fast or get to higher ground immediately.
If the tsunami wave is only waist high, is it still dangerous? Yes it is. Tsunamis move very quickly and carry lots of debris which can strike and injure you. They have a lot of water making them very strong.
Do you think it is important to learn about natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanoes? Explain your answer.! Opinion question. Answer could look like: Yes they are important to learn because...
What is a myth? A story cultures create to explain the natural world because it can be a scary and confusing place. As new information is gathered (through science and study) this story becomes myth.
Which is worse: earthquakes or volcanoes? Explain your answering using at least 2 of the following: magnitude, damage, destruction, effects on people and evironment. Opinion question.
