What does breathing involve? (2 things) 1. The diaphragm pulling down on the lungs and the rib cage moving out to air in 2. the air's dust and bacteria is filtered out by the mucus and cilia produced by cell's in the nasal cavity and lungs
What does the alveoli do? Alveoli connect the respiratory with the circulatory system which takes oxygen to all body tissues
Why does gas exchange occur quickly? In the alveoli, only a single layer of epithelial cells separates air from the blood in the capillaries, so gas exchange occurs quickly.
Name another organism that has lungs and another that does not. Birds, reptiles and many amphibians have lungs. Fish have gills instead.
Explain how asthma occurs. Asthma results from the construction of bronchioles which makes breathing difficult.
Name 4 things that the circulatory system transports. 1. Oxygen from the lungs to cells where it diffuses in and when carbon dioxide out, it is carried back to the lungs. 2. Nutrients from the small intestine to all cells 3. Waste from the cells to the kidneys. 4. Hormones from glands to target cells.
Name the other 2 things that the circulatory system transports. 5. White blood cells to the site of infection. 6. Heat using warmer blood moving to cooler parts of the body.
Compare arteries and veins. Arteries carry blood away from the heart while veins carry it back to the heart.
What are capillaries? Capillaries are the thin vessels where the transfer of nutrients, hormones and waste actually takes place.
